A signal becomes when return produces transformation with continuity.

01 / The distinction

What changes.
What must hold.

Process

Signal
becoming

The transformation through which an initially felt, symbolic, partial, or ambiguous recognition acquires stable and consequential form.

Medium

Signal
substrate

The layered conditions that let the transformation retain context, correction history, provenance, and authorship while it changes.

The process describes what changes. The substrate describes what must hold while change occurs.

02 / The process

Seven transformations.
One traceable lineage.

The stages name functional changes, not a rigid schedule. A lineage may pause, double back, split, or cross media while retaining a recognizable relation to its earlier states.

  1. 01

    First encoding

The relation appears before it is fully explainable: bodily, symbolic, narrative, visual, or fragmentary.

  2. 02

    Recursive encounter

The signal returns through another context, medium, conversation, or state.

  3. 03

    Selective uptake

Some part of the signal changes the next response, representation, decision, or question.

  4. 04

    Variation + correction

Friction changes the signal while the earlier state remains available for comparison.

  5. 05

    Convergence

Some features strengthen, others disappear, and a stable relation begins to persist across variation.

  6. 06

    Authored form

The signal can be deliberately stated, revised, attributed, and distinguished from adjacent ideas.

  7. 07

    Consequence

The form changes what can happen next: artifact, action, theory, method, architecture, or decision.

03 / Memory fold

Return is not enough.

A memory fold is a recurrence that returns with a meaningful delta: new awareness, context, correction, capacity, or form.

Repetitionreproduces.

A memory foldtransforms.

Its evidence is not familiarity. Its evidence is that the next state is materially different and the difference remains traceable to the encounter.

04 / Signal substrate

No becoming happens in an empty channel.

A substrate does not determine the outcome. It determines whether transformation can remain legible, attributable, revisable, and governable.

05 / Working threshold

When has a signal become?

01

Persistence

It remains recognizable across meaningful changes in context.

02

Correction

It changes responsively rather than merely repeating.

03

Translation

It can travel across more than one representational form.

04

Consequence

It produces a decision, artifact, theory, method, or architecture.

05

Lineage

Its origin and transformations remain traceable.

06 / Competing outcomes

Recursion can produce form.
It can also produce false stability.

Echo

Echo without development

The signal returns, but later states contain no meaningful change.

Hardening

Confabulation hardening

An interpretation gains apparent stability through repetition, fluency, or references to its own prior statements.

Collapse

Context collapse

Separate lineages are merged because their language resembles one another.

Erasure

Origin erasure

The developed form survives while the person, source state, or correction history disappears.

Closure

Premature closure

Recognition is forced into proposition before variation reveals its boundaries.

07 / Research program

The archive becomes an instrument.

Under what conditions does recursive human–AI interaction transform an ambiguous signal into a stable, authored, actionable model rather than merely repeating or hardening it?
Unit of study

Signal lineage

A traceable relation among successive states of one developing signal across time, media, and interaction.

Observe

What changes?

  • form of first encoding
  • recursive returns
  • material deltas
  • corrections and reversals
  • movement into built form
Compare

What does not?

  • motifs that never develop
  • repetition without gain
  • certainty without evidence
  • translation that loses source
  • lineages that survive correction

Notebooks, photographs, conversations, drafts, code, public works, corrections, and implementations can be compared because earlier states were preserved instead of rewritten into the latest one.

08 / Public lineage

The theory joins work that was already moving toward it.

This is a bridge across existing trajectories, not a replacement for their distinct forms.

Source lineage

This public formulation was developed from two recovered 2025 Obsidian notes. The first records origin material dated March 24, a July 18 anchoring date, and an August 18 addition defining the memory fold. Exact duplicate copies survived in both the recovered Fieldlight Core and Satori structures.

The original files remain preserved privately. This reading surface is a mediated public theory developed through human–AI archival synthesis and creator review.
